Blood Bling

by Sheila on February 5th, 2007

The blood diamond controversy is a-brewin’.

The Diamond Information Center issued a press release about leading ladies who helped support their Raise Your Right Hand Ring for Africa campaign. Patricia Arquette was one of them, wearing her right hand ring to the Golden Globes:

Patricia Arquette wore a Platinum, Onyx and Diamond Right Hand Ring by diamond jeweler to the stars, Neil Lane. Patricia is donating the $10,000 generated to CARE International (care.org), a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. The organization places special focus working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE’s community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.

Here is the best shot I could find of the ring. (Sorry folks. If I made the ring any bigger it just got all blurry):

Total cost of the jewelry ensemble of Neil Lane platinum, diamond and onyx ring, and a platinum and diamond necklace? $186,000.

But Ed Zwick, director of Blood Diamond, is disgusted with the whole campaign. The Envelope has the whole story with a tantalizing tidbit at the end that the male stars of Blood Diamond may wear something else to the Oscars to get the movie’s message out. (What could it be!)

I don’t know about you but if someone offered to pay $10,000 to my favorite charity and all I had to do was wear a big ugly ring for one evening? I would probably do it. After all, I have been known to wear ugly jewelry made for me by the loving hands of small children. This way at least somebody gets $10,000. Besides, I am a little unclear on the blood diamond message. Though blood diamonds make up less than 1% of new diamonds, “even a small percentage can wreak havoc.” So does that mean no one should buy diamonds, period, until there is a way to guarantee they are not “conflict diamonds?”

I don’t have a problem with that. I think diamonds and other jewels are pointless and stupid, but that is just me. I wonder what Hollywood, socialites, and rappers would do if jewelry priced over $50 was suddenly outlawed.

Heh. Only outlaws would have jewelry.

Poor Posh is still sad that her man Beckham is no longer in The World Cup. Was it because he checked out of the game too early? Or maybe since he has resigned as captain of the team. Is it possible she has lost even more weight because of the loss?

Flaunting the Views

Courtesy RedSeaHotels.com

I was reading Rueben Abati’s The Lonely Women of Port Harcourt (The Guardian Newspapers, Friday August 31, 2007) when the plane made a sudden bend towards my side. I was concerned (well, who wouldn’t be) because we were flying over what I thought was an impressive strech of red surface. I took a look to my side and got the message — the pilot actually did that deliberately, to have us enjoy a better view of the impressive mountains. It was a one hour journey between Cairo and Sharm El-Sheikh, and I must confess that the views were worth all the flaunting. Another look and I knew just had to get my camera to take a few pictures but… the lights were turned on — ahead of the descent. That word beauty must be what God had in mind when weaving those Sinai mountains. Unfortunately, my return flight is at night so I only hope I can get good pictures while in Sharm.

The flight arrived about 15 minutes ahead of schedule, and I think we have the windspeed to thank for that (which also explains the near-difficulty we had with landing). Those few minutes spent getting set for the doors to open proved useful as I had a quick chat with one of the organizers (Randa, the beautiful woman who sat beside me all-flight long) — and I had to tell her how pleased I have been with the logistics around this whole event. All around me, there are young men and women wearing white T-shirts with Youth Speak, We Listen boldly printed on them. I hope to combine work, rest and fun over the next few days and look forward to my presentation tomorrow morning. With the theme, Building Bridges across Geographical Boundaries, the moderator is the never-tiring, always-inspiring Walda Roseman, the CEO of Compass Rose International. Other speakers include my friend, Jennifer Corriero of TakingITGlobal, Mahmoud Shalaby from Cairo University, and Hanan Ouna, an International Telecommunication Union Youth Forum Fellow (like myself). I plan to speak on The Boundary in My Head.

Brokeback Mountain

Posted in Gay rights at 12:50 am by ducky

I saw Brokeback Mountain today with my beloved husband. It was a very well-done movie, certainly heart-wrenching, but I didn’t like its message.

I have met a number of people who think that being gay is all about the sex, and this movie could certainly reinforce that stereotype. I never saw the protagonists being emotionally intimate with each other, just physically intimate. I never saw them talk, I never saw them make any sort of commitment to each other. They seemed about as emotionally intimate with each other as they were with their wives, maybe less so.

My beloved husband disagrees with me. He thinks that the lack of emotional intimacy or commitment was just a reflection of how badly messed up they were as a result of society’s horribly ill treatment of gay people.

Regardless, the movie made me feel very lucky to be married to my beloved husband: lucky that society approves of our relationship and lucky that he communicates more and better than the protagonists in the film.

Seymour Melman, 86, Dies; Spurred Antiwar Movement

NY Times
Seymour Melman, a Columbia University scholar who helped galvanize the antiwar movement from the 1950’s on with analyses of the social costs of military spending, died on Dec. 16 at his home in Manhattan. He was 86.

The cause appeared to be an aneurysm, said Benjamin Abrams, his research assistant.
